IB Parent Information
Welcome to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Parent Resource Page. We know that parents and guardians play an important role in supporting students on their IB journey. This page is designed to help you better understand the IB framework, what your child will experience, and how you can be an active partner in their learning.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized education framework that focuses on developing students who are:
-
Inquirers who ask thoughtful questions
-
Thinkers who solve problems creatively
-
Caring individuals who take action to improve their communities
-
Balanced learners who understand the importance of academics, well-being, and personal growth
The IB doesn’t just prepare students for college or careers—it prepares them for life.
Why Choose IB for Your Child?

-
College and Career Readiness: Universities and employers worldwide recognize the IB for its high standards.
-
Holistic Development: Beyond academics, IB helps students build character, resilience, and leadership.

At the core of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is the student—every decision is made with their growth in mind.”
What is The Middle Years Programme (MYP)?
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an educational framework created by the International Baccalaureate (IB) for students aged 11–16. While traditionally a five-year programme, the MYP can also be offered in shorter formats of two, three, or four years, depending on the school.
In an MYP classroom, students are at the center of learning. They make connections across subject areas, engage with real-world issues, and develop skills in critical thinking, creativity, and communication. Participation in a foreign language is required, and teachers use a variety of formal and informal assessments to guide and enhance learning.
MYP learning experiences encourage global awareness by integrating international perspectives and promoting understanding of different cultures. Students explore the human experience, recognizing both our diversity and shared humanity.
The MYP curriculum is broad and balanced, comprising eight subject groups:
-
Language and Literature
-
Individuals and Societies
-
Mathematics
-
Sciences
-
Physical and Health Education
-
Language Acquisition
-
Arts
-
Design
A unique feature of the MYP is its focus on four key elements: approaches to teaching, approaches to learning, global contexts, and concepts, which help students think critically and make meaningful connections.
In the final year of the programme at JL Long, 8th grade students will complete a Community Project—encourages students to take action in their communities. Through this project, students identify an issue, research it, and create a meaningful solution or initiative. It’s a chance for them to apply what they’ve learned in school, develop leadership and problem-solving skills, and make a positive impact on the world around them.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success.
They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them.
Each of the IB's programmes is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile.
The profile aims to develop learners who are:
